In June 2024, ABB’s 2030 and 2050 science-based net-zero targets were officially approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). ABB’s sustainability efforts have been substantiated by a series of compelling figures: in 2023, ABB’s sold products were expected to avoid 74 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions over their lifecycle; in its own operations, the company reduced total energy consumption by 21% compared to 2019, with 64% of its energy use and 94% of its electricity coming from renewable sources. Additionally, landfill waste was reduced to 6.3%, representing a 40% decrease since 2019.
Climate Milestone
2025
- Shanghai ABB Motor Co., Ltd. obtained a Greenhouse Gas Verification Statement and a Product Carbon Footprint Verification Statement.
2024
- In 2024, ABB’s Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions were reduced by 9% compared to 2023, and by 78% compared to the 2019 baseline.
- In 2024, 95% of ABB’s electricity came from renewable sources. This achievement was mainly driven by the company’s integrated renewable energy procurement strategy and the progress of on-site renewable energy generation at its facilities as part of the Mission to Zero™ program.
- Compared to 2019, ABB’s energy productivity improved by 69%. This was primarily due to continuous enhancements in operational energy efficiency, with total energy consumption decreasing each year since 2019 while revenue has continued to grow.
- ABB’s two factories for motors and generators were recognized as “Zero-Carbon Benchmark Factories” by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization.
- Starting in 2024, ABB adopted a new version of its Supplier Code of Conduct, which places greater emphasis on sustainability-related requirements and expectations for its suppliers.
